The Eastern Cottontail Rabbit

(Eastern Cottontail found at wikimedia commons under creative commons cc)

The Eastern Cottontail is the most profoundly sighted rabbit in North America's wild. This little bunny to the left is hiding out in some mugwort and muscadine. Must have been nibbling a bit before the camera caught him by surprise. This little critter likes fields, meadows, farms and many places he can get away with nibbling on something green.
The little bunny is strictly herbivore. He eats a little bit of twigs, leaves, berries, veggies when you aren't looking and herbs like mugwort.  They live in thicket that's so deep predators cannot bother them. Their main adversaries are people, cats and coyotes. Your everyday house cat will catch them and eat them. They attack their predator by using their back feet. They are best left alone if all possible, but sometimes they can be tamed.
These are completely precious little creatures, if you see them, they will come back again if you are quiet. Respect their space so they will meet you again.
