Chimney Swift

(Chaetura pelagica, chimney swift found at wikimedia commons, creative commons 3.0)

This is an adorable little  bird with a cute face that starts it's rounds of catching bugs in the afternoon. It's a high flyer like some predators. If you want to know what you are looking at in the skies in the evening and it don't look like a small brown bat, you now know it's a chimney swift. There are also other little swifts that may migrate within the area, sometimes Vaux's swift is seen in Alabama.
I love swifts. They are the one thing in the environment that eats evening bugs. If you will notice in the afternoons there are clouds of insects, this is natural pest control. Brown bats and swifts are becoming more dense as the environment changes. I hope that you will find a place for these animals if they are annoying you. Sometimes they set up residence in one's chimney, if there are natural places you can find for them, you might have less insects flying around.
