During the Winter months, the only real thing that seems to catch the hearts of Alabamians is seeing the changes
in the environment. Alabama has a lush evergreen forest full of several different pines and the lovely leafless hardwoods. Even if our environment is mildly cold and breezy, we still have vegetation that grows among the vast landscape that protects our wild. Grasses and smaller herbs are dense to the ground. You will find a variety of greens like wild turnips and dandelions that can withstand any frost that comes by.
Moss provides a very clean and green floor in many places. The moss is a non vascular plant that doesn't bloom. It depends on carbon dioxide, water and sunshine like a regular woody herb. It goes through photosynthesis like other plants, but doesn't have the root systems that it takes to be firmly planted in the ground. It's like a big sponge that absorbs moisture and stays as green as astroturf unless there are severe drought conditions.
Woody perennials tend to stay green but not blossom. Hypercium Preforum (St. John's Wort) tends to stay green but sheds it's small seeds for birds to snack on. The seed pod also provides an opportunity for another season of growing.
Just because Alabama is a little cold during the winter doesn't mean that the animals migrate away. Birds migrate from cooler climates in the Southeastern United States. If you are an avid bird watcher, keep plenty of feed and water around for them to come and visit. You'll notice there are more colorful ones will attract to your seed because of scarceness of certain plants they dine on. Thank you for reading and take care
