Nine Banded Armadillos

(ninebanded armadillo found at wikimedia commons under creative commons)

The Nine Banded Armadillo is a little stinker that comes out at night and digs in your yard leaving little holes the size of it's nose. It'll dig and dig for bugs, worms and their larvae. It's yummy to them, but nasty to us.

The Armadillos are found throughout the South. You can find them in Alabama, Georgia and Florida.  They like nice scrubby land with lots of woody places so they can hide out. The only place it has hair is on it's abdomen or what we call the stomach area.

If you are wondering what the heck this strange little critter is kin to, it's clear that the armadillo eats grubs, insects, ants, eggs, and stuff from the ground.  The anteater also eats grubs and digs for insects. Closest anteater in the United States is one that lives in South America.
