Southern Longleaf Pine
picture taken in 1996 (c) samantha taylor 2009
The Southern Long Leaf Pine is a long straight standing pine tree with huge pine cones and long dark green needles. They are so strange when they are young trees, they remind me of little pineapple trees because there is a small bud of long needls in the middle and they spew out just like a little pine apple tree.
The Southern Long Leaf Pine was endangered for a long time because when they were cut down for logs, they weren't replaced by the companies that cut them down. Georgia-Pacific which is now Wierhauser replaces each tree that they cut down. Throughout the Southeast you'll see these beautiful trees. They remind me of pencils sticking up out of the earth because they are so long and straight. I am seeing more of these trees around my home and area. I am proud to know there are companies out there that are replenishing trees back into their habitat because the environment is in need of them. Janet Jackson wrote a song called, "Love would never do without you" The environment is just like this. God's natural beauty cannot be replaced by a photo or painting. It has to be there to be seen.
