The Lolobby Pine

(lolobby pine found at wikimedia commons under cc)
What a lovely pine which pollinates in the springtime.  This pine is called pinus taeda and it grows all over the state of Alabama. These pines are around the Cahaba river. It's such a neat place that I wanted to share something else that grew around the Cahaba.
The lolobby pine tree can reach heights of 100-150ft in height.  These trees are long pencil like trees with young limbs at the top. These pines are just intermediate compared to some of the mighty pines in the Alabama forests.
This pine has some of the best lumber in the Southeast. It has a beautiful yellow look to it that is great for log homes and furniture . It is also very good for the pulp fiber. These used to be the major growers in areas of plantations.
The lolobby pine has a very lovely scent, and the blooms during the early-late spring are just beautiful. The pine buds it's conifers as you can see in the picture above. This pines needles can last up to two years before they fall off.
Imagine springtime on the Cahaba with the fresh scent of lolobby pine trees and the beautiful Cahaba lily. If you live in the Southeast, you need to visit the Cahaba River and see what it has to offer!
