The Tallow Tree

(tallow tree found at wikimedia commons under cc)

The Chinese Tallow tree is found near low areas of marshy wet lands in Alabama. There are a large number in Alabama that have multiplied in countless numbers. People cut them out of their yards everyday. They don't care whether they are tallow or another weed.

The tallow tree comes from China, Taiwan, and other Asian countries. The plant has been used to make soaps and candles in China and Taiwan. The leaves can be boiled in to herbal medicine used.  It has also been used for biodeisel fuels. Biodiesel fuels have been used in vegetable oil such as corn, algae and now this plant.

This plant turns rich and vibrant colors during the fall. The deciduous plant has ripe purple berries during this time which are not edible. It was introduced in Colonial times by Benjamin Franklin. He introduced it to such places like South Carolina and it became a naturalized plant on the Southeastern coast and has continued to stretch along that area. Bugs tend to keep away from this plant.

The honey bees in your area are very in love with the pollen. Bee keepers can have this invasive species around for it's pollen. If they want a cheap plant to help with the production. This is one of the first trees that you notice during the fall months when the leaves change color. You will love watching the wildlife in summer through fall with this plant.
