Southern Flying Squirrel

(picture found at wikimedia commons, creative commons 3.0)

The Southern Flying Squirrel is one of Alabama's cutest creatures. It has these big brown eyes that make the animal really adorable. They live within Alabama and neighboring states.

The Southern Flying Squirrel gets it's name because it glides from tree to tree from some loose skin around the arm and leg areas. They look like a small kite flying from one tree to the other.

This small squirrel rather reside in a long leaf pine tree than anywhere else. They are omnivorous unlike other squirrel species. This animal not only enjoys his nuts, but eats grub worms and other larvae. This critter's kingdom name is Glacomys Volans. They are rodent but they have more characteristics of their cousins the prairie dog, bats, and mice rather than squirrels that harbor trees and eat seeds and nuts.

The Southern Flying Squirrel is more prone not to be seen over the other populations of squirrels in your area. If you are an avid bird watcher, this is a cute one to watch. Especially when they are babies. They are cute and cuddly all over the trees.
