Sweet Shrub

(calycanthus floridus, sweet shrub found at wikimedia commons, creative commons)

The calycanthus floridus shrub is about 6-8 feet in maturity. The flowers bloom around spring and sometimes later. The wood from the shrub and flower smell as good as some expensive colognes. In fact, this shrub is noted in books for perfumes.
Another name for Sweet shrub is Carolina Allspice and it was often substituted for the particular herb.
More images and parts of the plant can be seen at the Vanderbilt College's website. There you will see a mini field guide to the plant. There are other resources on the web that you can find about Carolina Allspice, perhaps, you can find how to use it in your recipes. Always make sure you know what you are doing.
