The Russian Olive Tree Elaegnus Angustifolia

(elaegnus angustifolia found at wiki media under creative commons law)

When I told my father that there was an olive tree in Alabama, he didn't believe me. Probably because most olive trees take lots of years before they are able to produce fruit and aren't used like Israeli or Italian Olives.

The Russian Olive Tree is one that produces a silvery leaf with a beautiful small yellow blossom that later bears fruit  which is small and cherry like. Like some plants in our environment mostly the fruit is very small. It's used for medicinal purposes. It is used to cure rheumatoid arthritis and more! The fruit as a sweet taste which is a little mealy one might say.

Like many plants, this one's not indigenous to Alabama although it grows wild. It was used in European countries like Germany where it was cultivated for it's scent and edible fruit.
