Crawling Black Walnut Trees
Black walnut trees are very unique when it comes to multiplying. When a walnut falls or a squirrel disperses or drops a walnut, it goes into the deep rich soil and takes root. Trees take a few years to mature into larger nut trees. When they do, the plants create some of the best nuts you ever put into your mouth.
The only problem with black walnuts is they are very difficult to crack. Their exterior is a black and linear rigid outer layer. On the inside the nut meat looks as though you may have cracked someone's head opened and lost their brain. The meat is really sweet and the trees make very nice shade trees.
You will find black walnut trees on property of old houses throughout the state. It was a very popular tree to plant during the late 30's and 40's of areas throughout Alabama. The trees tend to have shallow roots and they will definitely fall quicker during a storm than an oak or a sweetgum. The same goes for any pecan tree. Pecan trees like Walnut trees have shallow roots too.
It's great to have nut trees in your yard. They attract beautiful birds like bluejays and cardinals. They also attrack mockingbirds as well. There's nothing as interesting as being a porch monkey listening to the song of a mockingbird mocking everything that they have heard throughout the day.
