The Egret

(Egretta thula, found at wikimedia commons under creative commons)

The Snowy Egret is one of Alabama's most beautiful gulf birds. They have been effected as much as any other animal in the gulf coast as they feed on the fish and mussels that live on the Gulf Coast.
They are a little white heron smaller than the great blue heron. They are 24 inches and about 18.5 oz. They love wading in the water eating whatever they can find.
During the 30's their feathers were used for flapper hats and jewelry among the wealthiest of women.  They love to dip fish, eat insects, and  live in colonies. Not only will you find them alongside of the ocean, you can find them in lakes and rivers nearby the eastern coast. One thing for certain, she is as peaceful as  the tides themselves, but the coastline is too sick for her right now.
