Common Reed

(phragmites communis found at wikipedia creative commons)

This "Common Reed" type is an edible plant, but very noxious throughout the southern coastline of Alabama  and Florida. This plant can be eaten as it's cousins are wheat and rice.

When you eat the shoots from the reed, you take the tough part away and eat the tender insides of the reed. Eat at springtime when the shoots are young. There are really many ways to prepare this one. I found this at herbvideos it can be eaten by steaming good.  They are done in five minutes, you peel them away from the outer hull.
In the fall, you can eat the seeds as granola. You can crush them in gruel and soups, eat them with cereal and berries. You can mix them with seeds, flax and berries and make waffles, pancakes and much more. You can learn more at herbvideos
