Whispering Whipoorwhill

(Whippoorwill found at Wikimedia Commons under creative commons)

This Whippoorwill is one of the ugliest birds I have ever seen in the State. It's moddled with grey, black, white, brown and undertones of those colors. I looked up information on the Audobon society. They have a moth-like flight, they mostly stay on the forest ground and lay their eggs on leaves they find in a good area.

They make a noise like this one that I found on a site that has bird calls and other types of information. The bird calls Whippoorwill like it's name.

Many writers have delegated the noise of this homely bird into their repertoire of mystery and suspense. Steven King which is the pop-star of the suspense novel has used this bird to add as a description to make the creepiness go along. Edgar Alan Poe used the same method. The list goes on.

As fires spread and wildlife has it's issues. The main threat to the whipoorwhil is the wildfires. The birds are comfortable on their forest floor and not many predators will have anything to do with them because they are moddled up like those nasty tasting moths they rather not smell of.

As drilling, logging and other types of forest deterioration continues, there will be issues with extinction of these birds. They don't fly like many other birds in Alabama do. The Whipoorwhil just basically hollers at night to let you know he's keeping in there. To help this bird out, you might want to contact the Alabama Forestry Commission.  Hope you enjoyed this post and I can't wait to let you have a peek at another Alabama creature!
