Tree Of Heaven

(photo found at flickr.com from maureclaire's photostream cc)

Our fair Tree Of Heaven's (Ailanthus Altissima) comes from China, Japan and Korea. It was the title of a famous Korean movie, and a pest or pretty tree in Alabama's Front Yards.
Our tree of heaven is smaller than most places. They have palm-like limbs and are the prettiest fall trees.

This tree has a huge history in China. It's used for medicinal purposes and mainly used as an astringent.  The Chinese used the plant for anywhere between mental illness and baldness.  The sources of the tree they use is the bark, leaves and the roots.

One thing that the Chinese liked about the plant is the host. There is a silk worm living inside the tree. The ailanthus silkmoth was used to produce silk for their clothing. The moth is pretty  and colorful kind of colored like the Viceroy that emulates a monarch butterfly.

The Tree Of Heaven can last up to fifty years. It has been called the stink tree and is considered pests to gardeners and land owners all over the state.
