Alabama Endangered Species List: Alabama Sturgeon

(alabama sturgeon found at wikimedia commons under creative commons)

The Alabama Sturgeon is one of the last fresh water sturgeons in the world that's ranked highest risk for Alabama fish and that in the United States. It's latin name is Scaphirhynchus suttkusi . It'll only gain to one to two pounds, but the fish can live up to twenty years. It was put on the endangered list in the early 90's and has continued to be watched by biologist today. The amazing and mysterious Cahaba River has a few of them. Each year the Cahaba River is celebrated for it's wonderful and rare types of species such as the mollusks discussed earlier and the Cahaba lilly that grows along the bank.
