The Cicada (Locust)

The cicada is a rather large bug that likes to sing at night and in the daytime. This bug looks big and intimidating, but it's very friendly.

The cicada or locust loves our subtropical climate and they thrive here in the Southeast. They feed on tree sap, under their head they have a needle like mouth which helps them feed on plants.

In Asia, people eat bugs like cicadas and also other in the Bible there are tribes that ate cicadas when they had nothing else to eat. The North American species of cicadas are named "Tibachen" or dog day cicadas because they start chirping at the end of July into August which is called "Dog Days". Cicadas sing with "instruments" called timbals which are at the side of their abdomen.  Cicadas can live up to 13 years which is as much as your pet cat or dog.
