Paronychia Erecta Shinners Squareflower

   In the coastal counties lies a small woody flower with a square cluster head called squareflower. You can find the flower growing around borders of the beach and on sand dunes.

According to Alabama Plants the flower's name was taken from a Greek source paronychia erecta was named for para meaning near, onych meaning claw or claw-like. Erecta came Latin meaning upright.

The squareflower is a perennial that grows along the beach from April to October. The flowers range from Louisiana to Florida along the beach. The flower is was used to treat abscesses and swollen places on the hand or foot.
