Alabama Shrews

alabama shrews are carnivorous and not too beautiful. Like, moles, their eyes aren't very good and they can be as long as 5.5 inches to one ounce in weight. They are from the genus sorrex. They eat mostly insects and grubs. There are several species in Alabama and they are all victims to preditors like dogs, cats, owls and hawks. Five varieties are pigmy shrew, north american short tailed shrew, southeastern shrew and the least shrew. They are all similar in size and behavior. They are easier going in woodlands and in grasslands. They only have one litter of babies per year and usually  5-6 resulting in survival.
