bald cypress

(bald cypress photo found at wikimedia commons)
The Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum)  grows in the swamp lands of L-A. Lower Alabama. They can be found as far down as Opp, Mobile, the panhandles into Florida.  It's leaves are a fern-like deciduous type of leaf and they have seed spores like a Sweetgum tree.  Their trunks are huge at the bottom and grows thinner as you go up. What's so amazing  about this tree is it can be found in the middle of the deep swamplands.

The seed spores are very large carrying 20-30 large triangular seeds. The trees you see are probably the oldest trees in the area. This tree is home to many animals such as the cypress flea beetle and other insects. The trunk is used as a habitat as well for the creatures underwater and around the swamp lands.
