Water Grass

(creative commons zinzania aquatica found at flickr.com)

This type of rice is found wild in alabama. It grows only annually in Alabama, but you can always find it again each year. It's often called "Water Grass" because it grows near wetlands.
The first time it was discovered was by the French Explorers that visited North America in the 1600's.
Native Americans picked and ate this type of rice in which it made up 25% of it's diet. The Sioux and Chippwa indians ate this rice according to Tastebook. There are preparation information there.
This plant grows throughout Alabama and throughout the United States. It's also grown commercially to be raised as food in the United States. You can probably find it in specialty stores. Many places I have seen have shown it to be a dark blackish colored rice. It's probably really nutritious. If you choose to go into the wetlands or grow it yourself, get help from someone who knows their plants. They can really help you out!
