American Lotus: Nelumbo Lutea

     The American Lotus is one of Alabama's most beautiful aquatic flowering plants. It is a common North America member of the family of Lotus's. The roots deep embed into the mud underneath the water's bed and takes root creating a system of lily pads and blooms. The North American Indians used to eat the roots of the American Lotus. The common name from the Native Americans was "Maucapin"  The flower has been crossed with other lotus's to create more beautiful subjects. American Lotus is a fast grower and is found throughout the Southeastern United States.
